Alex Johnson BSc (Hons) Ost - ISRN

Alex Johnson BSc (Hons) Ost

Born to Principal Dancers of the Royal Ballet, Alex grew up with osteopathy playing a prominent role in the maintenance of his family’s general health. This heavily influenced Alex’s early desire to become an osteopath and he subsequently started his training at the British School of Osteopathy in 1999. From 2000 onwards he also began studying classical osteopathy at the Institute of Classical Osteopathy, as well as the philosophy of Nature Cure.

Graduating in 2003, Alex started working for a prestigious member of the BSO in their well-known Osteopathic Clinic in West London. He also opened his own clinic in Chiswick, at the same time. He completed his postgraduate training in Classical Osteopathy in 2006.

Following the death of his father to Pancreatic cancer in 2007, Alex has been continually striving to understand the requirements for health and the causes of disease.  From 2009 he has continued his in-depth study of Nature Cure, Natural Hygiene and Biogenic Living with his mentor, John Fielder at the Academy of Natural Living in Australia. He was awarded full membership of the ISRN in 2015.

Alex runs his West London Osteopathic practice using Classical Osteopathy and ‘straight’ Nature Cure methods. He advocates the natural management of all acute crises without suppression. In the management of patients with chronic disease, he focuses on the removal of the causes of toxicity in order to promote the ideal environment for the body to heal itself.

Alex’s wife Jasmine trained in osteopathy and is a qualified yoga teacher. Together they had a natural home birth for their daughter Skyla and Zennah. As a family they live in accordance with the principles of nature cure, and have not sought medical intervention of any kind for fifteen years.

Annette Jowett ND - ISRN

Annette Jowett ND

Having grown up in a family with parents and grandparents who were great believers of the intrinsic natural healing power of the body and a father who is a graduate of the Edinburgh School of Natural Therapeutics, my interest in natural healing was nurtured from an early age. I firmly believe in the delicate interlinking and balance required between the physical, physiological and psychological aspects of living incorporating mind, body and spirit for good health and quality of life.

Having a passion for living naturally I have lived an alternative lifestyle all my life and understand the strengths and challenges that this way of life can bring. I have brought my four children up healthfully without any medication, caring for them through childhood healing crises using entirely nature cure methods which gave me a wealth of practical knowledge.
Initially taking a diploma in dispensing optics, I worked as a dispensing optician for many years before taking the opportunity to retrain. I undertook a four year postgraduate diploma run by the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths with some of the foremost Edinburgh trained Naturopaths in Britain. I then went on to further my training and knowledge undertaking a 6 month sabbatical in Australia to study natural healing methods and lifestyles at the Academy of Natural Living run by Dr John Fielder.

Along with my nature cure training I am a qualified massage and Bowen technique practitioner which enables me to give support through the physical crises which may occur on the way to recovery.

During a consultation I will take a full health case history which will enable me to guide you through the dietary, exercise and lifestyle changes required for you to improve and maintain your health naturally. Follow up appointments will continue to guide and support you and your family, through life’s challenges, towards gaining your optimum health.

Atul Shah graduated from the University of Bath in the 1982 with a honours degree in pharmacy. It was whilst he was studying at university that he started to question the whole business of why people felt ill as opposed to what you could do once you had the illness. After much soul-searching and research he came to the conclusion that causes were much more important than symptoms.

Furthermore modern medicine was virtually only treating symptoms rather than looking at causes (and not till the causes are tackled can you get a true recovery). We can see many people who have been treated by conventional medical means get worse over the years. This is of course because the basic underlying causes are not addressed. (it would seem that common sense which we apply in lots of other situations in life is often lacking in terms if our health. Would you keep going to the same garage with your car if they were unable to fix the problem and over a long time the problem not only got worse but you started to get additional problems as well. Masking the symptoms for example with a painkiller is akin to turning the radio up in a car that’s making funny noises).

IMPORTANT NOTE:- Please do understand that if you are taking medication you should not stop immediately ( NOR WOULD WE ASK YOU TO) but as your health improves the need for medication automatically decreases.

Atul then looked at various alternative therapies and these were providing a much better way of dealing with the symptoms but in his opinion they still failed to look at fundamental causes. (for example if you are not getting enough sleep and that is the cause of your headaches then you need more sleep and not better painkillers, stimulants, mental techniques to suppress a headache etc. In reality things are of course much more complicated than this example as often there are multiple causes coming together to create the situation ).

Atul eventually arrived at the conclusion that way you live must have much to do with what happens to you. At this stage he had not yet heard of Nature Cure or Naturopathy.

Atul moved to York to undertake a three-year full-time apprenticeship based training in Naturopathy with some of the leading Naturopaths in Britain. On completing his Naturopathic training a further two-year postgraduate training in Osteopathy was taken with the Northern Counties School of Osteopathy.

Atul Shah has been successfully treating patients since 1989. He has a proven track record in helping people to achieve real health gains. The programme provided includes education, support, help and guidance in a non judgmental way. The programme also includes therapeutic massage and gentle but effective manipulation (it often comes as surprise to many who have had manipulation in the past that effective manipulation needn’t hurt!)

Atul Shah has lectured widely throughout the UK on the subject of health and disease to the general public as well as being a tutor on the postgraduate Naturopathic training programme run by the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths, lectured at Keel, Lancaster and London universities.

He has held various posts within the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths ranging from President, Council member, member of the Education Committee and served on the Naturopathic Council.

Atul Shah is a member of The Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths, The British Register of Naturopaths, The Register of Naturopaths & The General Council and Register of Naturopaths.

He also runs retreats, seminars, cookery courses, & educational workshops on health related matters throughout the year.

If you would like to be informed of forthcoming events please send an e-mail to with the subject heading SEMINAR.

Atul Shah is available as a speaker for public lectures (generally only requires traveling costs to be met). If you would like him as a speaker please contact him by telephone. Atul not only talks the talk but can be seen walking the walk! Atul is also a keen long-distance cyclist and hiker.

Joanna Thomson ND ISRN

Joanna Thomson ND – President & Registrar

I was born and brought up at the Kingston Nature Cure Clinic in Edinburgh; my grandparents James C Thomson and Jessie R Thomson founded the Nature Cure movement in Scotland early in the 20th century. My father, C Leslie Thomson and his two sisters, Hazel and Joyce, and my grandparents established the Kingston Clinic in 1938 – a truly family business. I am steeped in the Nature Cure way of life but of course as any child should, I have questioned the veracity and methods of my forebears over the years, but when I have investigated, or contemplated, the alternatives, I have always seen the common sense in it. I still cheer every time I hear of some new piece of scientific research on the media that confirms for me anew what my grandfather first said 100 years ago. I see it as another small step towards reason and a wider understanding of our body’s inherent healing capabilities.

Although I chose to follow my artistic career as a precious metal jewellery designer and maker rather than immediately studying to become a practitioner, Nature Cure has always informed my approach to life. My business designing and making precious jewellery was the way I earned my living and supported my family and I believe that some form of creativity is an essential part of maintaining good health. I have also managed a theatre and worked with an environmental group as well as studying to become a fellow of the Gemmological Association of GB with Diamond Grading Diploma, during my working years.

When I did decide to study Nature Cure more deeply after my father’s death, I was fortunate enough to be taught by some of the graduates of the Edinburgh School of Natural Therapeutics (that was based at the Kingston Clinic in Edinburgh) during the four-year course. I now see patients in a small practice near Peebles and I am the Registrar of the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths, Secretary and Treasurer of the Tait Vision Fund (a charity that supports the delivery of Nature Cure treatment to patients who would otherwise not be able to afford it) and on the committee of the Thomson Kingston Trust (that runs the training courses).

I am also the mother of two sons brought up on Nature Cure principles who can both see the sense in the way of life and follow it as best as their lives will allow. I am also a grandmother of two little girls and two little boys. I have two highland ponies, and live with a handful of cats and two dogs. I have a medium sized organic garden where I grow salad greens and vegetables all year round.

ISRN - David Tinsley

David Tinsley, MA

I have been trained under the auspices of the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths (ISRN) to be a “Straight Nature Cure” practitioner and believe that the body has a superb innate intelligence to care for itself if we ensure it receives the right nutrition, rest, exercise and emotional support. It is this advice and support which I attempt to provide to all my patients and to guide them as they make the changes necessary for health.

My journey to Nature Cure began when as a head-teacher, working in very challenging and stressful positions, I developed colitis and was informed by the medical profession that it was highly likely to develop into ulcerative colitis. At that time I was fortunate enough to meet someone, who having grown up believing in and living the “Straight Nature Cure” lifestyle, was able to introduce me to a Nature Cure practitioner. It was he who taught me the Nature Cure philosophy and supported me while I made the necessary changes in the way I lived.

The changes in my health were so dramatic and rewarding that I made the decision to train as a Nature Cure Practitioner receiving training from the Northern School of Massage (4 years) and Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths (5 years). I later successfully undertook a one year course of training at the College of Osteopaths in support of the Naturopathic gentle massage and manipulation I use in my practice.

If you are concerned about your health and feel able to take responsibility for your own well being rather than passing it over to the medical profession the philosophy of “Straight Nature Cure” may be the approach for you. If you have passed through the hands of the medical profession, or other practitioners, without success and feel able to take more responsibility for your own health then “Straight Nature Cure” may be right for you.

It should be noted that I do not use supplements, herbs or any other form of “medication”, believing that a well cared for body knows best and that acute illnesses are attempts to heal itself and maintain homeostasis, thereby avoiding the descent into the more troublesome chronic illnesses.

Sheila Wallace ND - Nature Cure Society Practitioner

Sheila Wallace BSc

I went to work at Kingston Clinic in 1976, having heard about Kingston’s approach to Nature Cure at Enton Hall where I worked for a short while. I arrived, green indeed to the Kingston ways of natural teaching and living, and it transformed my approach to life and health.

I had been brought up in Edinburgh only a mile or two up the road from Kingston, yet had never encountered its philosophy or practice.

I worked alongside Mr C Leslie Thomson and Mr Alec Milne and give thanks for their experience, teaching and wisdom to this day.

I learned much from the patients too, as there were so many stories of remarkable restoring to health, often after years of conventional treatment.

Over the years I brought up a family along Kingston lines and in 1996 I completed the post graduate naturopathic course organised by Mr H. Leslie Harrison in conjunction with a number of other Kingston-trained naturopaths.

After Kingston finally closed I helped to organise and run 2 annual ‘Kingston Fortnights’ with Alec Milne in Boat of Garten where I went to live. These continued for approximately 10 years.

In 2005 I studied at New College in Edinburgh and my husband and I now live in Blair Atholl in Perthshire where I work as a nature cure practitioner and also work periodically for the Church of Scotland.

About the ISRN

The Society membership consists of a dedicated group of practitioners spread mainly within the United Kingdom, with some overseas; who have consistently maintained the principles of “Straight Nature Cure” in their practices and in their relationship to their patients’ education and treatment.

Practitioners of this society are deeply concerned at the deteriorating health of our present-day population, clearly illustrated by the increased incidence of chronic life-threatening diseases.

We firmly believe that quality of human health is the result of the individual’s lifestyle, influenced by their genetic inheritance; that being so, we maintain that the improved health of successive generations is a fundamental responsibility of us all. This will be dependent upon the promotion of positive qualities and lifestyles within our present-day community.

The type, source and quality of our nutritional intake, environment and activities must have a direct connection with the level of both individual and community health; this must logically extend to the health of successive generations.

Members acknowledge the importance of the nutritional qualities to be obtained from organically-grown whole-foods as a fundamental contribution to the health of the soil, the individual, and the health of successive generations. We see high-powered advertising of convenience foods, part foods, non-foods and their intake, as one of the sources of the low-grade health that demands more hospitals and health-care in our society. Members of our society subscribe to the observation and philosophical contention that, if well cared for, the human body is extremely resilient and capable of incredible self- healing processes in its maintenance of health. Also, that human beings are highly evolved beings with an endless potential, but they still need to remove the basic causes of ill health, and endeavour to understand that only by removing causes of ill health will health be attained and maintained.

We regard many acute symptoms such as fevers, if carefully handled, as being in themselves, the healing forces of the body at work, and as such should be intelligently respected.

Practitioners of our society, the oldest Naturopathic practitioner society in existence, have had at least four years of training covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, dietetics, hydrotherapy, manipulation, exercise, fasting and counselling and are advisors of positive self-help programmes.

Our practitioners’ involvement with patients always starts with a consultation; this includes taking a comprehensive case history and physical examination, leading often to hands-on treatment (such as manipulation or hydrotherapy) and always to lifestyle advice; with a commitment to providing further help and assistance, as progress is observed. The practitioner’s task is to direct the patient towards regaining and maintaining a higher level of health.

ISRN practitioners contend that patients must be actively engaged in and working toward their own achievement of health; which besides the added benefit of the patient gaining greater self-confidence and awareness of health, promotes an understanding that this is not due to some concoction that they may have been persuaded to imbibe, but by harnessing their own innate healing potential.

ISRN Logo - Nature Cure Society UK

New ISRN logo

This logo represents a fresh flowering of Nature Cure; we felt it was time for a new logo to represent Thomson Kingston Nature Cure and the long-established Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths as it moves into its second century. We are at the start of a new awakening of interest in true alternatives to orthodox medicine and many more individuals are seeking ways of achieving and maintaining health in a more natural way. Our National Health Service is struggling; antibiotics are meeting ever-greater resistance due in no small part to over-use and the big multi-national pharmas, so often the shining knights of the past, are being exposed as corrupt far too often.

Nature Cure is a complete lifestyle choice so, of course, any logo would have to reflect this. The basic philosophy is that Nature Cure puts the patients in control of their own life and health. It enables them to be far more aware of how the environment in which they live affects their health, and how it does in so many different ways. Equal importance is given to all aspects of their lives and as a result as they become more aware of those influences. There will be far less tolerance of the many imbalances that affect their health and a real desire to address those imbalances.

The Petals

The original logo or icon was based on a square sitting on the ancient conventional symbols for Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The new logo has five petals to represent the five senses: Touch, Taste, Smell, Hearing and Sight. The colours of those petals also represent those older established elements.
