Richenda Power, PhD
Four years of training at the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy led to Diplomas in Naturopathy and Osteopathy (1983) preceded by a BA Hons (1982) and in the 1970s, Diplomas in Montessori Method, and the Philosophy and Practice of Yoga.
Academic studies continued while I established my practice, with a Masters in Sociology of Health and Illness (MSc with distinction, 1984) for which I wrote a dissertation called ‘A Natural Profession? – issues in the professionalisation of British Nature Cure, 1930 to 1950.’ This involved interviewing several Edinburgh School of Natural Therapeutics graduates, including, Tom Keell Wolf, James Johnson and Leslie Harrison, as well as those who would not be classified as ‘straight nature cure’ practitioners, to get an idea of the big debates of the time such as the NHS for example. A research paper on that work was published by the Polytechnic of the South Bank (1989): ‘Specialists of the Natural, 1930-1950’
My PhD (1991) was also undertaken at South Bank, and is called ‘The Whole Idea of Medicine. A critical evaluation of the emergence of ‘holistic medicine’ in Britain in the early 1980s.’
I joined the London Freelance Branch of the National Union of Journalists in 2002 after serving for two years as the editor of ‘Osteopathy Today’, and joined the Medical Journalists’ Association in late 2009. I have been in practice now since 1983. A consultation is usually for about an hour and includes a review of health history, and enquiry into self-care (work, rest and play; feeding, drinking and breathing) and, often, a physical examination.
Then there is a discussion of what is best to do. Occasionally this may mean seeing your medical doctor as well. Often some physical treatment is given, for example, massage and exercises. Sometimes relaxation techniques are taught. If big changes are being made in the way you look after yourself with eating and so on, I may review what is going on about every six weeks. You can have access to me by phone, email and text so any questions can be answered as quickly as possible.
